Drug-Safe Workplace

Current Role & Activities

The Drug-Safe group began as a committee of Regional Drug Initiative in 2002 and transitioned to become an affiliate of Portland Human Resource Management Association in 2006. It has sponsored speaker series on company alcohol and drug policy, drug testing technology, and stress-related alcohol consumption. Since 2004 it has offered annual employer forums on Accommodating Medical Marijuana Users at Work. In 2004, it co-sponsored a survey by PSU of Portland-area employer substance abuse-related concerns, extent of company policy, and perceptions of substance abuse treatment. A 2008 supervisor training will be hosted by NW Natural.

Mission & Membership Criteria

The Drug-Safe Workplace Advisory Group mission is to: Use the knowledge and skills of Advisory Group members and community experts to promote and educate employers and the community about the benefits of drug-free workplaces.

To achieve this mission, its goals are to:
  • Host 2-3 employer community events annually;
  • Schedule 3-4 presentations per year by drugfree workplace experts for the professional development of Advisory Group members;
  • Survey local employers regularly on drugfree workplace and workforce concerns, extent of company policy and procedures, and perceptions of substance abuse prevention, intervention and treatment.
Its regular membership criteria include:
  • Attendance at a minimum of 6 of 12 Advisory Group monthly meetings each calendar year.
  • Active participation in at least one of the two Advisory Group projects/events per year.
These criteria may be met by proxy (ie by another representative from the member's organization). There is also a "professional resource" category of membership for those professionals who cannot regularly attend meetings but are willing to contribute their time and expertise toward achieving the goals of the group.
